Petroleum geologists use information gathered from boreholes, geophysical and geochemical data, geological maps, rock samples and remote sensing imagery to decide where to drill for oil and gas and how to optimize the extraction process. For more information on this occupation see www.alis.alberta.ca/occinfo.
- Like our Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/oilvips - Geologists and geophysicists have agreed on the existence of a "prospect", a potential field. In order to find out if hydrocarbons are indeed trapped in the reservoir rock, we must drill to hit them. Bearing in mind the knowledge acquired about the substratum and the topography of the land, the best position for the installation of the drilling equipment is determined. Generally it is vertically above the point of maximum thickness of the geological layer suspected of containing hydrocarbons. The drillers then make a hole in conditions that are sometimes difficult. Of small diameter (from 20 to 50 cm) this hole will generally go down to a depth of between 2000 and 4000 meters. Exceptionally, certain wells exceed 6000 m. One of them h...

This episode summarizes the geology and geography of petroleum and typical exploration and extraction techniques. Topics covered in this video: 0:00 - 3:51 - History of North America's first oil wells: Petrolia, ON and Titusville, PA - "Oil boom" 1860 - 1900 - Movement to Middle East and South America - Top 5 Countries: - oil production to date (since ~1860) - 2011 rate of oil production - remaining oil reserves 3:52 - 6:55 - Geography of the Middle East - bodies of water, countries - contains 60% of the world's petroleum reserves - map of oil field locations in the Middle East - Ghawar 6:56 - 12:38 - Why is oil concentrated in the Middle East? - Geological explanation - How to make exploitable petroleum ...
Petroleum geology is at the forefront of the oil and gas industry and either directly or indirectly affects every role. The topic has become even more important with the emergence of “unconventional” development because most people don’t fully understand the unique characteristics and challenges of unconventional development. The subject of petroleum geology has long been considered impenetrable without a geology or geophysics degree. We’ve changed that. This course will give you an intermediate understanding of the topic with only a beginner’s level of difficulty. We make extensive use of photos, graphics, videos, animations, real-world analogies, self-explore options and interactive exercises to explain complicated topics in an easy-to-understand way. The course contains several drill-d...
This GeoMapApp tutorial describes the Ocean Floor Drilling portal geological timescale and how to keep track of age and depth within core sections. The portal offers a wealth of information and data for more than 3,000 cores drilled as part of the DSDP, ODP and IODP programs. Separate tutorials cover the various functions within the portal. Created by the Marine Geoscience Data System group at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University. For more information about GeoMapApp see http://www.geomapapp.org
This video is my first video in a series about flipping the geophysics / geology / geoscience classroom.
Basically story goes, is that Shell asked a farmer for permission to drill for gold and ore samples on their property, farmer says no .... so so SHELL Geologists and Drillers, put their Drill on a 30 degree angle, which the drill goes under the road FOR 30 PLUS METRES, and into the Farmers Property.... and yes... they find GOLD!
